The Treehouse, 2012. 925 silver, mild steel, neodymium magnets.
A series of 12 interlocking brooches with magnetic clasps. When assembled, the cube measures 7cm x 7cm x 7cm.
The Treehouse Series was made for my final year major project while undertaking the Advanced Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design at Design Centre Enmore - TAFE NSW, Sydney Institute.
As a conceptual foundation for the project, students were required to select a book and to create a major conceptual piece, as well as a small production series, inspired by the book.
I chose "The Treehouse" by Naomi Wolf. Each brooch represents one chapter of the book - as well as one tenet the writer's guide to living a creative life.
The sterling silver parts were hand saw-pierced and soldered from flat sheet; the mild steel exterior was scored, folded, and treated with gun blue to preserve the finish and prevent rust. Each brooch has a matching magnetic plate which allows the brooch to be attached to cloth; the back of the plate is inscribed with the tenet that related to that brooch.
At the conclusion of this project, I was awarded the 2012 DCE Jewellery & Object Design Award and Scholarship for one year.
